In which case your friend is a numpty. You only need the CD for the initial CD check, after you've loaded your save game you get a message telling you that you can remove the CD from the drive. You don't need the CD in the drive to run the game, it doesn't get accessed anyway. Sounds more likely that your friend was running too many leagues for his machine to cope with.
